Candle followers are helpful from a practical as well as an aesthetic purpose.  They are placed on top of a candle, creating a barrier that prevents excessive dripping.  This helps to preserve the life of the candle as well as providing a clean appearance.  Some candle followers are also available with a glass shield to provide protection from drafts and windy areas.
